Spotify Cancels Car Thing: What You Need to Know

Spotify has killed off its first hardware product, Car Thing, an experiment in physical devices. As of December 9, 2024 Car Thing is no longer working. This fits with Spotify’s plan to focus on its core business of music and podcast streaming and refining its digital products.

What was Car Thing?

Car Thing was launched in April 2021 as a device to make Spotify better in cars. Initially it was invite only and then available to the public for $90. It was a hands free remote for the Spotify app with voice commands and a touchscreen to control music in the car. It was praised for its design and functionality but struggled to gain traction as it required a smartphone to work.

Why was Car Thing discontinued?

Spotify stopped making Car Thing in July 2022 just a few months after it was available to the public. The decision was due to low demand and strategic challenges. According to Spotify this allows them to simplify their product lineup and focus on building features for all users. No plans for a replacement have been announced so it looks like Spotify is out of the hardware business for now.

Refunds and Disposal

Car Thing owners can request a refund by contacting Spotify support by January 14, 2025. You’ll need to provide proof of purchase to get your refund. And please recycle your device responsibly to minimize waste.

The Hardware Challenge

Car Thing’s discontinuation shows the challenges of tech companies going beyond their core. Competing in the hardware space requires big investment and long term planning which Spotify may not have had for this product. Car Thing was aimed at a niche market but its limited functionality and requirement of a smartphone to work probably contributed to its short life.

What’s next for Spotify?

Spotify’s exit from hardware fits with their focus on improving the app and services. They’re still innovating in personalized playlists, AI recommendations and new user features so they remain the leader in audio streaming.

Car Thing may be dead but at least we learned something. Now back to the music. 🙂
